Sites and Servers

A server participates in the federation by responding to client requests directed to it by site names encountered in page specifications or entered directly via url.

A single server can host multiple virtual sites. Referred to as wiki farms, common practice has been to have farms create new sites on first reference.

A single server can usefully participate in the federation without offering all the behavior normally expected of a site. This is a useful mechanism for feeding the federation with information from other sources.
